WEDDING Etiquette

Please find below a helpful guide designed to help you prepare for your special day. Of course the timelines can be shortened, but knowing how popular dates become booked up, this guide should help prevent any disappointments.

The Wedding Day Etiquette

At The Church

Seating - the Bride's family and friends sit on the left hand side of the aisle and the Groom's on the right with close family nearest the front.
Ushers should arrive 40 minutes before the ceremony
The Groom and Best Man - arrive 20 minutes before the ceremony. The Best Man will pay the fees and then take their places in the front right hand pew. Wedding guests are expected to arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony
The Bride's mother accompanied by the Bridesmaid arrive 10 minutes before the Bride. The Bride's Mother should be the last person to take her seat with a few minutes to spare.

The Reception

The Bride, Groom and both sets of parents (and attendants if so wished) form a Receiving line to greet their guests. Sherry or Champagne is traditionally served. At less formal gatherings the Bride and Groom only receive their guests.

Top Table

The Traditional Seating plan is:
The Bride sits to the left of the Bridegroom:

Best Man, Groom's Mother, Bride's Father, Bride Groom, Bride's Mother, Groom's Father, Chief Bridesmaid.

Speeches

The Bride's father gives his speech and then toasts to the happy couple.
The Groom then replies on behalf of the Bride and himself. He thanks the Bride's parents for the Wedding (or both parents if the costs have been shared). He thanks the guests for their congratulations and gifts and then proposes a toast to the bridesmaids.
The Best Man replies on behalf of the Bridesmaids and to read out any cards if needed.
It is traditional for the Bridesmaids to receive a
gift - this can be given by either the Groom or the Best Man.

Cutting The Cake

The Master of Ceremonies or the Best Man announces the cake cutting
The groom should lay his right hand over the Bride's left (ring) hand and together they should make the first cut. The cake can then be cut into portions and served to the guests either with coffee or at a later date.

Departure The happy couple should leave the Wedding reception first and as they leave the Bride traditionally throws her bouquet to her guests.
