Sheffield prides itself on the wide open spaces and beautiful countryside that you'll find just a few minutes away from the city centre. It is the greenest city in England, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks in an enviable location just 5 miles from the Peak District National Park.
Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city, with a population of 513,100. The City offers a wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible.
Sheffield is a great place to visit in its own right but when you use the city as a base to see the rest of South Yorkshire, you'll very quickly learn that you need look no further than the city and region to see the best of everything that England has to offer. Sheffield is close to Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and the Peak District.
Sheffield has excellent rail links to all major cities. You can be in Leeds or Manchester by train in about an hour and London in less than 2.5 hours.
Sheffield is home to two universities with more than 40,000 students, Sheffield is one of the country's most popular student destinations. Sheffield is known as a city of sport, with an enviable choice of world-class facilities including the prestigious English Institute of Sport Sheffield. These include Europe’s largest ice complex and all season ski resort, Olympic -standard swimming pool, golf courses, tennis and squash courts. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity of the Peak District and all it has to offer for walkers, cyclists and climbers.
Sheffield is a city with a fascinating industrial past, and the city boast many attractions that celebrate it illustrious past. In the 12th century, iron smelting was the chief industry, and by the 14th century, Sheffield cutlery, silverware, and plate were being made. During the Industrial Revolution the iron and steel industries developed rapidly.
