MUSEUMS

The Millennium Gallery

The Millennium Gallery is an outstanding venue for the visual arts, craft and design, right in the heart of Sheffield. Both elegant and innovative, the gallery breaks with the traditional institutional image of an art gallery and is a welcoming and vibrant place to be for pleasure and education.

With four individual galleries under one roof, there are all sorts of wonderful things to see and enjoy. Be inspired by treasures from the past, admire masterpieces from Britain's national collections and discover new creations by artists and makers working today.

Built on two levels, the Galleries has an internal 'avenue' which leads from the entrance on Arundel Gate to the Winter Garden, and off which the four galleries are located. The Learning Centre hosts a public programme of activities including talks and practical workshops.

To enjoy The Millennium Gallery to the full, we would recommend allocating the two hours to this activity. For those interested in visual arts, craft and design we would highly recommend this activity.

Kelham Island Museum

Kelham Island Museum was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield's industrial story. The displays at the Museum tell that story from the "Little Mester" to mass production, skilled workers, revolutionary processes, quality products, invention and innovation.

Located in one of the city's oldest industrial districts, the Museum stands on a man-made island over 900 years old. Inside the Museum buildings, you can witness the sights and sounds of industrial Sheffield through the exhibitions, working machinery, activity areas and event days.

See the transport collection that includes the famous Sheffield Simplex car, built in 1920. Also on display are the Charron Laycock car, Richardson Light car, Ner-a-car motorcycle and Rolls-Royce jet engine. You can also see the conservation workshops, where engineers work to preserve Sheffield's industrial heritage.

To enjoy Kelham Island Museum to the full, we would recommend allocating the two hours to this activity. For those interested in Sheffield’s past, we would highly recommend this activity.
